my first event as equestrian marshal in charge!
amazing little drama or angst, other than the usual prima donna type (MUST learn to grow a backbone. It is not fair, right or practical to shift everything and everyone to accomodate one person, no matter how loudly they whine. It is not my job to make everything right for everyone, and if I try, I end up making those who DONT whine deal and pay. that's not right.)
we did a new format, and I think with some tweaks, we may have a winner. yay us!
we went with as close to the King Rene format as we could. instead of a gallery of ladies randomly assigning points if/when they were paying attention, we asked four judges of major SCA fame (11 peerages among 'em, a society officer and a BOD member) to do as King Rene ascribes and attend our tournament. We gave them a fair wad of points that they could attribute as they wished, but we encouraged them to look at equitation, panache, style, authenticity of presentation, grace, chivalry and general stuff that in theory we're all here to support and encourage. the rest of the points was then assigned based on pure skill, ie how many pigs did you stick? how many rings? how many reeds? and etc?
we gave the competitors a choice of seven different games, and they had to pick four to count towards their score (the "a la carte" system). a bit of whining "why cant I do more?" but I noted by the end of the day everyone was so tired, I dont know they could have done more even if they had had the chance :)
note to self games that are one person against one person tend to be more spectator friendly, although from a logistics standpoint, they can be a lot more work/time to figure out how to run.
our neighbors to the north had founded a "calvalry" group and came as a unit. yay them!!
more later, but the event was a rousing success, if I do say so meself :). we had 20 competitors BOTH DAYS (undheard of!! folks come for Sat and dont stay for sunday, usually!) and about 16 or so horses. woot! we opened the arenas, challenge course and track (yes, we had an entire race track at our disposal. woot!) at 8am and most folks were riding all day, even if it was just wandering around the track chatting with their friends :), with the same again on Sunday.
I think much fun was had by all.
my favorite things:
the guy who won the overal champion is a GOOD guy. good horseman. well rounded. yay. :)
the aquaterra calvalry :)
getting to see one of my favorite rental horses again :)
getting to spend some quality time snuffling and petting horse noses
getting Walt and Carolyn to come play with us :). they're brand new to this sca thing and this is the first real event they've come to, in spite of pitching in on projects, etc for about a year now. they had a great time. yay!
my least favorite things:
not getting ride. not once. much poutage. but I dont know how I could have, really. oh well.
one person pitching multiple fits over the weekend. at one point I was close to throwing her off the field as her hystrionics was causing danger to my crew and her own horse. ack.
getting told to get off my own field when I was giving my riders instructions on how the next game was going to work and reminding them of important safety points
how tired and crispy I felt sunday night. I'm not sure what to do about that.
anyway, much fun. folks are talkinga bout doing it again next year...we'll see about that....but I'm tickled that they're even considering it :)
