"Make a post in your journal listing all the things in your garden (or planned to be in your garden this year) that you intend to eat."
folks who know me (as in have been to my house and had non-SCA conversations with me) know this already...I'm really into gardening and edible landscaping, especially edible flowers. so much so that
smithwick thinks I should be a master gardener or enter my yard into contests (isnt that sweet ;)? I'm just an incorrigable dabbler, really, who lucked out in buying a house with a big yard to play in :))
ready?
in the front yard:
roses
sorrel
various herbs planted as ground cover
stello d'oro day lilies
various johnny jump ups
a red currant bush
rhubarb (I didnt plant it and havent had the heart to rip it out, it just keeps coming back every year....)
a meyers lemon tree (in a pot, lives in the house in the winter)
a fig tree (soon to be 2, thanks to
gattagrigia :))
a fruiting quince tree (which has just put out flowers. what the #$%? and something is chewing on them...need to spray with soap, I think)
rosa rugosa
Passionfruit vine (ok, the fruits arent the edible kind, but they'r related ;))
strawberries the previous owner planted as ground cover. ths squirrels are very appreciative.
2 cherry trees. I'm very popular with the birds, too
a rosemary (I think I'll move it, its not happy there)
a patio planter by the frnt door with edible flowers and herbs
lavendar in the front bed as well as by the front door. need to replace those...they're the little dwarf kind and I wanted tall ones that you'd brush when you walked up to the door :)
in the back
by the back door:
roses :)
more rosa rugosa (anyone want some???)
a bay laurel (thanks
ursule :)
tons of johnny jump ups :)
various herbs as ground cover
another rosemary
sweet violets
a flowering crabapple (the flowers are edible, I've never seen it make fruit)
mint (in a pot ;))
in pots on the patio:
two blueberry bushes :)
calendula
english daisies
pinks
nasturtiums
flowering sage
more herbs (tons!)
chives which are blooming right now :)
another rosemary (thsi one for the flowers)
cosmos
more johnny jump ups :)
in the main yard:
three apples and two pear trees
a large happy borage plant :)
some pots I planted with sunflower, cosmos, calendula and other edible flowers
maybe the birthday fig tree from
gattagrigia?
in the veggie garden:
raspberries (I hope I dont lose them all...I had to rip out half of them this year because of a virus :( )
bee balm
tomatos (red, yellow and white cherry tomatos ;))
a giant sage that is trying to take over the world (it shares the bed with the tomatos and so gets a lot more attention than my other herb platns, which are basically tasty ground cover ;))
asparagus (which I am trying to eradicate but it keeps coming back)
potatos (which I am also trying to eradicate but the little buggers wont die!)
strawberries (I've already eaten one and it was lovely :))
arugula (which I grow for the flowers)
nasturtiums (pretty tasty and good bug control!)
still need to plant:
carrots (red, yellow, orange, white and purple :))
beans if I'm gonna do 'em (I was waffling due to water restrictions, which arent as much an issue now...maybe I'll just do some scarlet runner for the flowers, which the hummingbirds love so much :))
sunflowers
the veggie garden is much smaller than last year due to injuries and water restrictions, but as long as I get my homegrown tomatoes, its all good :)
in the side yard, more rosa rugosa, and some rogue blackberries that I havent decided if I'm going to encourage or not ;).
I also have a ton of other stuff in the yard (both back and front) that isnt edible, but you didnt ask about that ;)
future projects include:
building a raised stone bed along my north property line and moving all the roses on my property there, mixed with lavendar and rosemary
slowly replacing lawn with beds
working on my shade beds. right now they're VERY overgrown.
so much to do...so little not rainey time...:)
